DAY OF THE LOCUST
1975

Director John Schlesinger called me to work on this project before he had cast any of the major roles. The Nathaniel West novel is a scathing look at Hollywood & Schlesinger had always wanted to turn it into a film. As soon as the leads were cast I was ready to go to concept. Photographer Michael Childers provided ravishing reference of Karen Black as starlet Faye Greener. I had dreams of hats and hands for months. I will never forget doing a surprise presentation of our poster against the ad agency’s tawdry photo-montage campaign in front of Paramount chief Frank Yablans, who had been on the job one day. Yikes!

Acrylic paint, watercolor, Prismacolor Colored Pencils.
