THE BIG FIX
1973

My cousin Douglas Mount was editor for Straight Arrow Books, a subsidiary of Rolling Stone Magazine. This Roger Simon hippy-gumshoe-with-a-noir-twist detective novel was their very first release. I went to San Francisco to help with the launch. I remember that we drank Campari and smoked dope while watching the Watergate hearings; I visited collagist Setty’s underground pleasure dome; and at the end someone threw me a party. Those days seemed halcyon. –David Byrd
