During this period of time, art directors would tend not use you unless your work was exactly what they wanted: I could only create rock posters—I could never do a book cover, because I never had done a book cover before. There is some logic to this I can understand, but it is very frustrating if you want to move on out of an artisitic corner, so to speak. Berkeley Books wanted a book cover that looked like a poster. Also, it was a subject I was familiar with, Sarah Bernhardt, a world-reknowned actress, who had made her chosen artist, Alfonse Mucha, almost as famous as she.
